A Painter's Modern Loft Is Light-Filled and Dreamy — House Tour

Name: Lysa Jordan, Sergio Castano and dog Walter
Location: Montreal, Quebec
Size: 1,100 square feet
Years lived in: 6 months, renting

Artist Lysa Jordan and architect Sergio Castano live with their dog Walter in a working and living loft nestled in the Saint Henri neighborhood. Quite unconventional from typical Montreal apartments, their pad is a modern, minimal, and creative space for both of them. “It’s a stimulating and inspiring place. The light is abundant throughout the day and I’ve got all I need at hand to paint at any time. I can relax as much as concentrate for work.” Her abstract paintings are made with a selection of acrylics, oil pastels, and inks, expressing a balance between fullness and emptiness and directed by an emotion of tranquility. With the impressive windows and soothing artwork carefully displayed, one feels easily at home here.

A Classic Chicago Loft Ready for Christmas — House Tour

Name: A couple and their schnauzer/poodle mix
Location: Ukrainian Village — Chicago, Illinois
Size: 1,600 sq ft
Years lived in: 2 years, owned

These two had to do a lot of work after purchasing this space. The chain smoking previous owner had been there for years and the loft was covered in (stinky) carpet. Ceiling ducts 12 feet off the ground were a grimy, salmon color and in an overall unattractive state. [Editor’s note: This tour is a rerun from last year because it’s just decorated so cheerfully for the holidays!]

A Traveler's 400-Square-Foot San Francisco Studio Apartment Is Simple But Meaningful — House Tour

Name: Jon O’Shaughnessy
Location: San Francisco, California
Size: 400 square feet
Years Lived In: 3 years, renting

I moved to San Francisco almost six years ago from Boston. It’s a genuinely unique place and I couldn’t be happier to call it home. That said, as much as I enjoy my apartment, I’m usually happiest when I’m far away from it. I have a goal to spend time in 100 countries before I die, and so far I’ve been to 41. To me, exploring new places, people, or cultures is living life on steroids. You get to experience completely new ways of doing things, meet people who are both unimaginably different and yet strangely similar to you, and see firsthand the breathtaking things on our planet.

A Dutch Instagram Star's Cozy Farmhouse Is a Labor of Love — House Tour

Name: Jellina Detmar, her husband Jan, their children Déjan and Melin
Location: Kollum, the Netherlands
Size: 2,422 square feet
Years lived in: 1.5 years, owned

It’s hard to believe Jellina and her family moved to this old farmhouse a mere one and a half years ago. The former residents had created a drywall box within the house, concealing many of the home’s beautiful elements like the big wooden beams. She and her husband Jan really wanted to let these original features shine, so they had to strip everything bare before they could start building up again. An immense amount of work, especially since they do most of it themselves. Luckily, Jan is extremely handy and has a part-time job in the concrete business (that gives him more time to renovate their home). Jellina is a physical therapist, but in her off hours she loves to style and photograph their interior. Together, this couple is a force of nature and the farmhouse— built in 1668—is rapidly transforming into the cozy home of their dreams.

Move Over Chip and Jo — This Georgia House Wins Farmhouse Chic — House Tour

Name: Laura Gibson and family
Location: Sharpsburg, Georgia
Size: 1,500 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, owned

No matter whether you’re personally a fan of farmhouse chic style or not, you have to hand it to Laura Gibson: She’s a woman (and blogger) with a distinct style. And an attention to detail that customizes every inch of a plain home. The house she shares with her family didn’t start out this way three years ago; it’s taken a lot of DIY projects—from knocking out walls to even converting a garage into a living room—to transform this former rental space into the industrial farmhouse home of Laura’s dreams. It’s not completely finished yet (are homes ever really finished, though), but it sure has come a long way from where it started.

A Converted Commercial Loading Dock Turned Modern Home — House Tour

Name: Jasmine Waheed and cat Barney
Location: Garment District — Montreal
Size: 1,500 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years, 8 months, owned

After traveling across—and falling in love with—Canada, Jasmine Waheed decided to move from London to Montreal 15 years ago. Her background is in graphic design, but upon arriving in Montreal, she decided to make the switch to photography. “When I moved to Montreal I discovered that the way design agencies work here was very different to how it worked in London,” she reveals. “The design circuit here is much smaller and not as specialized as it is in London. I was fortunate enough not to have had to work for the first few years that I moved here, so I decided to diversify my photography, maintaining the music event photography that I enjoy, but moving into photographing food more than portraiture in recent years. I still do some design work but really only for the underground electronic music scene that I am involved in.”
