See This Photographer's Total Apartment Decor Overhaul — House Tour

Name: Elizabeth Podlesnik
Location: Queen Anne — Seattle, Washington
Size: 900 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, renting

Back in June, this former personal stylist-turned-photographer got an itch to redecorate. Like, seriously redecorate. “I sold everything on Craigslist and Offer Up, and started from scratch,” Elizabeth told me. I was slightly jealous of the adventure she’d just been on. From scratch, you say? Swoon. I really do have a thing for blank slates. Over the course of the next several months, Elizabeth made regular visits to a huge consignment store in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood for interesting pieces, surfed Amazon more often than her friends feel is reasonable, and splurged on items she knew she wanted to last. More importantly, she took her time. She’d only finished putting the final touches on it about a week before I came to snap pics—or, that morning, if you count the fresh flowers she dashed out to get last minute.

Years lived in: 1 year, owned

Welcome to Scandi Week—Apartment Therapy’s seven-day focus on all-things Scandinavia (often defined as the countries of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway). Sometimes it seems like the whole world is obsessed with trying to copy this corner of the globe, from its timeless style aesthetic to its now-famous coziness rituals. For the next week, we’ll take a look at all of it—cleaning, pop culture, and of course tons of eye popping design inspiration. Pull up a blanket and get hygge with us. This tour is a rerun of a gorgeous Scandinavian home we toured a few years ago.

Kaja, a marketing consultant, and her partner Thomas found their dream home in 2015 when they come across a listing for a newly renovated loft. The top floor of this historic four-floor building had remained untouched since its construction in 1914. In 2015 developers transformed this space into modern apartment units where dwellers can enjoy a view over beautiful central Oslo.

A Small Home Gets a Design Refresh After a Breakup — House Tour

Name: Farah Altoumah
Location: Little Italy — Toronto, Canada
Size: 400 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years, renting

As a designer, Farah understands the importance of making a living space feel like home—physically, emotionally, and even spiritually. Following the end of a romantic relationship, Farah decided to remain in the 400-square-foot space she had shared with her partner. But doing so required a design re-vamp, which proved to be vital in her healing process. Though the break up wasn’t dramatic or overly painful, the couple was moving in different directions personally, and decided it was better to part ways. They still remain close friends and, Farah says, “it was for this reason that I didn’t want to completely wipe the slate clean and start again.”

Location: SE Portland, Oregon
Size: 2,500 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years, owned

When Angela purchased her turn-of-the-century home, the kitchen was literally falling off the back of the house. “After moving in, I learned the original 1906 kitchen was moved from the center of the house onto the BACK PORCH! That little tidbit explained the slope of the kitchen floor! I had myself a genuine indoor/outdoor kitchen. For that reason and more, everything was ripped out down to the studs, a solid foundation was poured, and all new everything was installed…”

A Cool Chicago Condo Didn't Start Out This Way — House Call

Name: Jamie Nuccio, my cat, Ruby
Location: West Loop — Chicago, Illinois
Size: 900 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, owned

As soon as I walked into this space, I had a strong gut feeling that it was “the one” (it was only the second place that I toured when I started my condo search!). The walls were painted a dingy mint color, the bedroom carpet was hunter green and about 1,000 years old, all of the fixtures and hardware were outdated, but the natural light is amazing and the view and location can’t be beat.
