A Laid Back Home Was Decorated on a Shoestring Budget — House Tour

Name: Jamie Gasparovic, husband Ryan, and two rescue pups
Location: Orlando, Florida
Size: 2,000 square feet
Years Lived In: 2 years, owned

When my husband Ryan and I were looking for our first house, we were looking exclusively at fixer uppers. I’m an interior designer, so I’m very particular about my house looking how I want, and I didn’t want to pay a premium for someone else’s tastes and renovations that I didn’t even like!

A Vintage Hunter's 420-Square-Foot West Village Studio — House Tour

Name: Alex Fitzgerald
Location: West Village — New York, NY
Size: 420 square feet
Years lived in: 6 years, owned

The trick to studios is how to make the most of the space you’re given. For Alex, a studio apartment previously owned by an architect obsessed with built-ins has proved both a boon and a challenge. An avid antiques collector and reseller (and lover of all things related to Scandinavian design), Alex balances his desire for a warm and well-curated space with the necessities of living in a small apartment — like where to hide your AC unit and bed.

An Animator's Seattle Cottage Is Sun-Filled and Charming — House Tour

Name: Joe Gast and Willow the Weimaraner
Location: Leschi — Seattle, Washington
Size: 1,690 square feet
Years lived in: 25 years, owned

My 1908 Leschi cottage was a victim of several ill-conceived remodels and plenty of deferred maintenance. A transplant from Ohio, with an Ohioan’s modest budget, I purchased the house because it was in my price range and it was located on a magical stairway, steps above Lake Washington.

A Small San Francisco Home's Lovely Remodel — House Tour

Name: Gina Gutierrez, Max Maloney, two cats, Frank and Bob, and a tripod dog, Luna
Location: San Francisco, California
Size: 1,106 square feet
Years lived in: 4 years, owned

Three of the things that we love about our home are the layout, the light, and the location. The layout of our home is fantastic, which makes up for the small square footage. Before our remodel, some of the room sizes were a little odd and the house felt cramped—after the remodel, it feels as if we’ve gained 50 percent more square footage just by removing a few interior walls. In a city as expensive as San Francisco, utilizing every square inch of a layout really matters—there’s simply no room to waste.

Size: 1,800 square feet
Years lived in: 2.5 years, owned

When Hayley Francis set out in search of her dream home in Seattle during the summer of 2015, she did so toting a wishlist of charming must-haves: checkerboard black and white tile floors in the kitchen, hardwoods throughout, and a classic Craftsman style. And, in the midst of a rapidly rising and highly competitive housing market, she was lucky enough to land a house in Seattle’s desirable Roosevelt neighborhood that checked off all of the boxes on her list— and then some! She had effectively hit the first-time homeowner’s jackpot.

A Small But Stylish Basement Is a Couple's Retreat from the Hustle and Bustle of D.C. — House Tour

Name: Samantha Nobles and husband Daniel
Location: Capitol Hill, Washington D.C.
Size: 500 square feet
Years lived in: 2.5 years, renting

The Nobles’ Nest is our first home as a married couple, for this reason alone we have a special adoration for this basement apartment. The couple who lived in the space before us are coincidentally our friends, and when they were moving out we conveniently slid right in to fill their spot! The best part of living here? We are within a few blocks of most of our friends and community. It is not uncommon to have surprise drop ins and spontaneous dinner or drinks with our friends in the neighborhood! When things feel too crammed, or I am desiring a nicer bathroom or more kitchen counter space—I stop myself and think: “One day you will miss this little place and all that comes with it! Savor this season!” It truly is all about perspective.

BuzzFeed Life Editorial Director Peggy Wang's Queens Home Is a Vision in Blue — House Tour

Name: Peggy Wang
Location: Ridgewood, Queens
Size: 1100 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, owned

A few years ago, I kinda just woke up one day and decided that I didn’t want to live in a tiny apartment anymore. It was like a weird sudden existential outburst in my usual lazy put-everything-off-forever mindset. My boyfriend’s friend happened to be looking to buy a two-family house, which is what planted the idea in my head. It took about eight months between that day I had the epiphany to the day I closed on the house.

The Cartorialist's Classic, Relaxed California Home — House Tour

Name: Carly Kuhn
Location: Larchmont — Los Angeles, California
Size: 1,303 square feet
Years Lived In: 1.5 years, renting

“I moved into this space about year and a half ago. I was drawn to this space because of the great location. As a New Yorker, I love this Larchmont area that’s really walkable. It also has insane light, which is always a priority, especially since I work from home and need a lot of light to feel inspired,” admits Carly Kuhn, artist and founder of The Cartorialist. But even after over a year in this loft space, she didn’t quite feel like she had her home’s layout right. There’s lots of light and beautiful views, but also a wide open floor plan. She explains that “it was difficult to conceptualize the entire design and layout without seeing everything together.”

A Shaker-Inspired, Hand-Built Vermont Farmhouse — House Tour

Name: Sarah Priestap-Porter and Jeffrey Porter. Our land-mates are Arlo (rescue mutt) and Glaumur (Icelandic Horse)
Location: Tunbridge, Vermont (Central Vermont, for y’all who have no idea where this is)
Size: 1620 square feet
Years Lived In: 1 year, owned

When I started dating Jeff back in 2009, one of the first things he told me was how his dream was to build a house for his family some day. It was college, and the time when everyone talked about big dreams, so I never took it seriously. After all, he was a photography major with a little woodworking experience at the time, not some experienced builder. It wasn’t until 2011 when we moved to Vermont and he began to apprentice with a timber-framer that I realized how real his dream may be.
