A Brief But Fascinating History of the Refrigerator

Once my friend Chad came to see me. Upon entering the house, the first thing he did was go to the refrigerator, open the door, and stick his head inside to check out the contents. “I want to see how you live,” he said. This may not be the accepted protocol for visiting a friend in their home, but I think Chad was on to something. What’s in our refrigerators says a lot about us. If we are what we eat, then the refrigerator has become a huge part of who we are. It’s become so common that we may not give it a great deal of thought, but this one appliance has had a tremendous influence on the way we live at home. And yet, less than 100 years ago, people didn’t have refrigerators at all.

The Best Toasters — The Guide 2018

Toasters don’t have to be pretty to get the job done. But imagine how much more you’d like your countertop space if your toaster added to the decor rather than the clutter? Of course, there’s more to the appliance than looks — truly, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Can it toast evenly? Is it easy to clean? How much guesswork is involved in getting the shade just right? When that’s wrong, then it doesn’t matter how attractive your toaster is — you just want your toast. We’ve rounded up our favorite toasters that strike that balance between good design and function, so you can have your toast and eat it too.

Well, Of Course, Ina Garten Has One of the World's Most Beautiful Ovens

I am an absolute sucker for a fancy-looking oven. I know, I know, ovens are tools and what really matters is how well they perform, not what they look like. But I can’t help myself; I just adore a beautiful range. Give me brass knobs, bars on the doors, and a range of colors that include options like “Provence blue.”

Basically, give me Ina Garten’s kitchen, complete with her brand-new French range from Lacanche.

The Small Appliances We'd Bring to a Deserted Island

The “stranded island test” is a good way to think about the products you use that you really, truly love. I asked the Apartment Therapy editors what one small appliance they’d bring along if we were all whisked away to an island in the middle of nowhere (where electric outlets may or may not exist, but that part isn’t supposed to matter).
