An IKEA Product Developer's Light and Airy Home — House Tour

Name: Adam Wihlborg
Location: Former French Concession — Shanghai, China
Size: 950 square feet
Years lived in: 4 years, renting

When Adam Wihlborg tells the story, it’s hard to believe that six flights of dark and dusty stairs once nearly deterred him from signing a lease on his spacious, light-filled flat looking out over the trees in Shanghai’s French Concession. Now, friends and visitors who have successfully ascended those steps are greeted with a cheerful vanity and tidy shoe rack, just a small sampling of the coziness to come: Inside the home, vanilla-custard colored trim, white walls, picture windows, and a jungle of greenery complement spaces neatly filled with vintage treasures and more modern, Scandi-style touches. The former refers to the collections he accumulated over nearly a decade in and around China, and the latter is the inevitable result of being a product developer at IKEA. Editor’s note: This is a tour rerun because it’s such a beautiful space.

Sometimes it seems like the whole world is obsessed with trying to copy this corner of the globe, from its timeless style aesthetic to its now-famous coziness rituals. This tour is a rerun of a gorgeous Scandinavian home we toured a few years ago.

Anette and her husband purchased a fourth floor (elevator-less) renovation project in 2012. It hadn’t seen an upgrade since the 1970s, and in just under one year they managed to infuse the 19th-century gem with the high style that Scandinavian design is famous for. Anette gives her living space character by combining the old with the new, paying homage to the building’s bones while incorporating both function and aesthetic in her modern decorating choices.

Living rooms are already an essential heart of any home, and—on top of that—Scandinavian living rooms have a lot of heart. No two are alike of course, and each finds their own special way to stand out, but all share one common thread that’s a hallmark of Scandi design: the ability to balance—whether it’s blending clean-lines and functionality with welcoming texture and warmth, or finding ways to bring outside nature indoors. Here are a handful of Scandi (and Scandi-style) living rooms that feel good just to look at.

Space is not easy to come by when hunting for a home in central Oslo, so when Edith found this two-story townhome, she did not let its need for a little TLC scare her away.
