Before & After: A Cookie Cutter Suburban Home-Turned-Vintage Surf Hideaway — House Tour

Name: Rachel and Nick Kuchar
Location: Ewa Beach, Hawaii
Size: 2,040 square feet
Years lived in: 5 years, owned

We turned our cookie cutter suburban home into the vintage surf hideaway we had dreamed of. We were given a 1950s Gordon & Smith longboard from a relative and that began our love affair with the era. I asked my husband, a graphic designer, to make some art for the house since I couldn’t find anything that was just right. My husband now sells the vintage style surf art he designed for our walls.

On three and a half acres just outside of Boulder, Colorado sits a working farm where vegetables grow on their vines, flowers sway gently in the breeze, and sheep graze. New England-based interior designer Jess Cooney worked reno magic on an old carriage house a few years ago. Everything from an exterior paint job to a complete refresh of the interior transformed what was an outdated, dark space. Though she sold the home a little while ago after buying the original main house next door, her careful contemporary remodel of the structure’s charming architecture is worth studying for inspiration.

This Home's Cheery Decor and Wallpaper Will Make You Smile — House Tour

Name: Jennifer Biswas, husband, son (2 years), daughter (8 months), dog
Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Size: 3,600 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years, owned

When my now-husband, Rishi, and I got engaged we started looking for a home to purchase. Since he’s a California kid living in Minnesota, he was dead set on getting a new construction home so we didn’t have to deal with frozen pipes and all the joys of older homes. I, on the other hand, wanted an old home full of character that we could update and make our own. After walking through countless sterile new builds that felt like a hospital and just as many older homes that felt like you were going to fall through the floor, we pulled up in front of a spec home for its open house. One look at it and its adorable pergola out front, I knew it was the one. Yes, it had some of the elements of new construction that I disliked, but it had so many things about it that we both loved.

A Clean & Colorful Oslo Townhome — Scandi Week House Tour

Name: Edith, husband Ole, and 2-year-old daughter Ebba
Location: Holtet — Oslo, Norway
Size: 1,600 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, owned

Welcome to Scandi Week—Apartment Therapy’s seven-day focus on all-things Scandinavia (often defined as the countries of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway). Sometimes it seems like the whole world is obsessed with trying to copy this corner of the globe, from its timeless style aesthetic to its now-famous coziness rituals. For the next week, we’ll take a look at all of it—cleaning, pop culture, and of course tons of eye popping design inspiration. Pull up a blanket and get hygge with us. This tour is a rerun of a gorgeous Scandinavian home we toured a few years ago.

Space is not easy to come by when hunting for a home in central Oslo, so when Edith found this two-story townhome, she did not let its need for a little TLC scare her away. Rather, she saw potential, reworked the layout, bade farewell to the 1970s wallpaper, and carpeted floors, and created a stylish family home.

This Cozy Renovated Cabin Will Make You Crave Fall Temps — House Tour

Name: Jenny McClary and Allie Leepson
Location: Wardsboro, Vermont
Size: 1,100 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, owned

We bought our three-bedroom, Adirondack-style cabin in southern Vermont (smack in between Stratton and Mount Snow). We were impulsive with the buy, but it has turned out so well. The cabin was built in ’82 and sits on about 1.5 acres of land. The interiors are covered in knotty pine and feature unfinished stone flooring in the kitchen, front entryway, around the fireplace, and the sliding door to our wrap-around deck. We did nearly all of the renovations ourselves (painting, changing light fixtures, swapping out functional hardware, etc.). Our goal was to turn this traditional Vermont ski cabin into a well-designed space that’s more than just a place to take your snow boots off.

Empty Nesters Downsize to a Cheery, Patterned California House — House Tour

Name: Carolyn Rebuffel Flannery and husband
Location: San Rafael
Size: 1,600 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, owned

When we first saw the fabulous bungalow home at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, we were smitten. The interiors were mostly original and there was a giant blue farm sink in the kitchen, original to the house. Regretfully, the sink was completely impractical but we are turning it into a potting sink in the garden. We paid homage to the sink by painting the cabinets blue and getting a cute blue dualit toaster.
