I Tried Brooklinen's Cashmere Sheets—Now I Know What It's Like to Be the Star in a Nancy Meyers Movie

As someone who practices (what some might call) extreme prioritization of physical comfort, my curiosity was piqued when I spotted an email from Brooklinen announcing their new heathered cashmere sheets. For me, cashmere sheets conjure up images of fancy people lounging in five-star hotels or Nancy Meyer movies… definitely not something in the realm of my day-to-day reality. But I was already familiar with Brooklinen, the popular direct-to-consumer bedding brand that raised funds on Kickstarter back in 2014 (and you may have seen their excellent marketing featuring adorable furry friends). I’ve been a fan since purchasing their Classic Percale sheets a couple years ago.

The $35 Amazon Duvet That Makes My Bed the Best Spot in My Apartment

When I moved to New York City last year I approached the prospect of furnishing and decorating my first “real” apartment with excitement and, in typical Virgo fashion, a vision. My main goal was to create a cozy abode that would be my refuge from the insomnia and nonstop hustle happening outside. Of course, the most important area in which to achieve this goal was my bedroom, a dark space that got zero natural light but that I was determined to transform into my own personal hibernation den.

Thanks to an Amazon gift card, I focused my searching there, researching rugs, beds, bedding, pillows — pretty much all the essentials. Out of all the items I eventually bought for my new home, my proudest purchase is this unassuming white comforter that has brought me more joy and peace than basically anything else–for $35.

The 10 Best Organic Bedding Sources — Shopper's Guide

If you’re striving to be more eco-friendly in your everyday life, a natural place to start is in the home. Aside from more obvious changes like using eco-friendly cleaning supplies and being more mindful of waste, another step is to buy organic bedding. Since we spend so much time in our beds, it makes sense to seek out products that are free of chemicals and potentially harmful substances. But it’s not enough to just buy sheets (or any fabric) simply labeled “organic.” While the FDA regulates organic labeling on food, there are currently only voluntary certifications when it comes to textiles.

There is, however, a global certification you can look for. GOTS, or Global Organic Textile Standard, not only certifies manufacturers are using eco-friendly, sustainable techniques but also fair labor practices. While organic bedding tends to be more expensive, the trade-off is certainly worth it. Below, ten bedding sources that are, at a minimum, GOTS-certified.

Questions We All Ask Ourselves: Should You Switch Duvets in the Summer?

Summer-proofing your home happens like clockwork. Once the temperature rises, you add an air conditioning unit and screens to your windows, trade in your woodsy candle for a beachier scent, and swap out your flannel sheets for some lightweight linen ones. The Best Linen Sheets — The Guide 2018

Despite being devoted to my bed and coziness in general, I must admit that I’ve never really paid attention to bedding beyond aesthetics. My naïveté led me to believe that sheets were sheets; why did it matter what material they were? I was (obviously) very sorely mistaken, but I didn’t realize it until I purchased a microfiber sheet set from Amazon solely based on price. Not only did they start pilling after two washes, but they made me, a not especially hot person, sweat like crazy no matter how cold my room was. After months of uncomfortable nights, I finally called it quits and started doing bedding research.

That’s when I finally discovered the wonders of linen sheets. Surely you’ve seen the look on Instagram or Pinterest: Perfectly rumpled linens that make you want to dive right into bed. They’re easy—softly wrinkled is the goal! They’re also breathable and seriously good at temperature regulating, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. No more kicking off the covers! They also get softer with time, won’t pill and are environmentally-friendly. They’re practically perfect in every way, although they aren’t exactly budget-friendly. Fair warning: 100% linen bedding is costly, but oh so worth it. Read on—we’ve rounded up our favorite sources for linen sheets so you can see for yourself. (Note on pricing: all prices listed are for Queen sets. If a set is not available for purchase, then the pricing reflects the cost for a top sheet, fitted sheet and two pillowcases.)
